Spit Up the Truth

So as my title states, this is a post all about Spit up. OK not all about spit up but some of it is. We were over at our Neighbors house today (we didn't have the yard sale because it was suppose to rain (even though it didn't). So were watching a really good movie Fire Proof. I thought it was awesome even though its a "religious" movie it was really good and I would recommend it for those who have not seen it. So I'm there and my wife has the baby trying to burp him. Then she gets a little spit up on her shirt. No big deal I know the drill take the baby try to burp him some more while she gets cleaned up. So she wiping the spit up off and I'm burping the baby when he lets out this grownup size burp followed by the sicking uhhgkk (the noise that you make when you have indigestion and it comes up but goes down to fast for you to spit it out). Well I take a look at my shoulder and it is covered with the white chunky spit up. All down my back too. It was so bad I had to ask my neighbor for shirt to borrow. All he has clean is a muscle shirt. I guess you cant get the whole image of this shirt until I tell you I have almost no muscle I have extra baggage that I cant get rid of. While I am over weight and by medical I am Obese (I spell checked this but not sure if it right or not) I don't think I'm really that bad. So I put on the shirt knowing I don't look good in and raise my arms. Low and behold I'm wearing a midriff. Yep to all the people who wanted the image. So about this movie fireproof I wont tell to much about it if you haven't seen it because I don't like it when some one tells me all about a movie. I like to go to a movie just because I haven't seen it or heard all the good parts about it. Any way Its about a guy who is trying to save his marriage and learns about God. That's all I'm saying. Oh yeah I also cleaned out half the garage today. I'm kind of glad we didnt have the yardsale yet cause I'm still finding stuff to sell.

  1. That is pretty disgusting! I am so glad that you were officially baptized into fatherhood! Lol. You will get used to it. Eventually you won't clean it, because there will be no use.

I watched the movie Fire Proof. I thought that the acting was good for a Christian movie. However, I did not really like the message, because I think it gives men and women a false hope. If you take the Fire Proof challenge then everything will be great in the end, even if you don't understand. You don't have to believe in God and you don't have to understand who He is, but if you do this little challenge then your marriage will be fine and you will become a Christian. In the end in your marriage all will be peachy. As noted in my previous blogs, I am against zeal without knowledge. We are called to understand as rational beings we are not called to be beasts- I believe but I don't understand.

  3. I think you missed the simpilar message. He took the challange with out wanting God in his life. At the end of the movie he realized how wrong he was. I dont believe this has to be 40 days it can take some time for a person to realize how great God is. The people who wrote the movie only had a little under two hours. The message isn't take the challange everything will be fine, its more of take the challange and learn, while it helps your marriage you can grow closer to God. Also I don't believe God asked us to understand everything. I believe he gives us the chance for understanding in his time. "From the movie Evan Almighty". If you pray for patience does God give you patience or a situation to use patience. Does he give you more time with your family or a chance to spend more time with your family?

  4. Sean,

First, let me say that I am glad that we can discuss these things even though we are miles apart. :-)

I do not think that I missed the simpler message. The message of the movie was that he and his wife were struggling in their marriage and they were on the verge of divorce, and affairs on her part. His father offers him a challenge and resists because his father is a Christian and he does not want to believe in Christianity. However, still doubting that God exists he begins to take the challenge reluctantly because he fears losing his wife. In the end he did realize something. He realized that he was wrong for being selfish within his marriage; however, I do not think he realized that he was wrong for not believing in God (having unbelief). In addition, everything he did was not for God but for his wife. His primary reason for taking the challenge was because he wanted his relationship with his wife to be repaired, God was just an accidental side-effect. In other words, God was the mashed potatoes and his wife was the steak!

I agree with you that the amount of time does not really matter. You said, "it can take some time for a person to realize how great God is". Growing in understanding about his greatness is different from understanding how we know God is great. Many times I think that people assume things about God (e.g. He is all powerful; He is all knowing, etc.) without even knowing why God is all powerful or all knowing. We as finite creaturs can never know everything, which means that we cannot understand everything. However, we are called to understand who God is through our understanding of the world (Romans 1:20). Failure to know who God is through what He has made (creation) is inexcusable. God just does not give us understanding but he gives us the means to understand through the use of reason. By using reason we can know that God exists apart from special revelation (scripture). God just does not give us understanding in His time apart from working to understand. It takes work and is often times strenuous, but we can know that God exists if we are willing to seek. The reason why we don't understand who God is, is because we don't seek. If we seek, then we would understand, and then we would be able to do what is right. It is because we don't seek that we don't understand then we don't do what is right (Psalm 53: 2-3; Romans 3:11).

  5. I think the movie wasnt putting God as the Potatoes (which are more filling than the stake) I think it was saying that God can use situations for people who are trying to get family or friends to listen to them about God. While I know there are people who preach God and don't care about the relationship with the individual, (meaning when some one talks to a non-believer they wont actually talk to them as a friend but as a person who just wants to convert the other and can actually turn the person futher from God). I think this movie is saying that the relationship can still be there but we should look for the circumstances that the person is going through and use it to get them thinking about God. So the reason they might come to God is because they were working on an issue or a problem they'll stay and Grow with his understanding and Love and. I dont think God really cares how a person finds him, as long as they find him. A person that is a Non Believer will not make God first in their life. That will come after they know and understand that is what God is asking from them. Once they believe then they should accept God first. I believe they did that in the movie when he was looking at a boat and the porno image popped up. He asked God and himself why it was so hard to say No to it. Then he took the computer outside and beat it with a bat.

  7. I do agree that the main character was not static but progressed towards becoming a better person for himself and for his wife. However, what if his father was Mormon or Jehovah's Witness and still gave him that challenge, would we still be saying, "I dont think God really cares how a person finds him, as long as they find him"? If God does exist does He care that you have the right God? Does He care if we worship Him as Allah, Krishna, or the God of the Bible? My point is this: how do we know that we have the right God?

  8. OK Sam I'll admit that I am like a beast. I dont have all that much understanding yet. While I am progressing (slowly, slower and slowly again) I am not to your understanding yet. I do enjoy these discussions but besides the bible I'm not quite sure where to turn to. Can you help? Maybe It's time for my next jump.

  9. I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, are you?

My dear friend Sean, we are all like beasts at times. Left to ourselves we would not seek God. The reason why we don't understand is because we don't seek God like we should. It is because God is merciful that we are able to seek Him. He allows us to suffer so that we can stop and think about who is God. We are all at different levels and progressing at different paces, but as different challenges come up against our faith by people who don't believe we must be able to give them an answer for our faith.

Hebrews 11:1 states, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for the EVIDENCE of things NOT SEEN (GOD). Faith is opposed to sight (God cannot be seen because He is a spirit); however, faith is not opposed to reason, proof, and understanding. The reason why I am engaging you about finding reasons why you believe is because I want to see if you want to engage me in discussion about how we can know that God exists apart from scripture. I want to get you outside of your comfortable zone and help you grow in your knowledge of God. I am what they call a true friend because I want you to know God. If you were being sarcastic please let me know why. If not, I am willing to take the time to have discussion with you if you are willing. :-)
